Istanbul - Turkey

FuFu World Tour

Turkiye 7th - 22nd May 2007
Istanbul, Day 1 & 2 - Part One

Dubai Duty Free, Dubai International Airport.

Stopped over at Dubai International Airport, i was able to see the Palm Jumeirah (in the shape of palm tree) from top, the world's largest man-made island and is touted as soon to be one of the world`s premier resorts. Dubai, the ultra modern city in the middle of the desert. Unbelievable transformation. I believe it would be an amazing place to visit few years later when all of the projects probably completed.

Jumeirah beach. The Palm Jumeirah.

Emirates was safely landed Artaturk International Airport at 5.30pm. Met up my online buddy, Necla, her youngest sister, Sevda and mother in front the arrival hall. Went back their house by taxi.

My VIP room.

Welcome dinner with Necla, Sevda and mother.

The next day, i woke up at 8.30. Breakfast was prepared by Necla.

My friend, Necla is real a pretty girl.

Yerebatan Sarayi.

After breakfast, Necla and i took train to historical sites, Sirkeci, Istanbul. We first went to visit the Basilica Cistern, the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that still lie beneath the city of Istanbul. Also known as Yerebatan Sarayi, it was an underground chamber built during the age of glory of Eastern Rome in the 6th century.

The Medusa head column. Teardrop design column.

There are two mystery columns in this cistern. First is the Medusa head sculptures were placed at the base of the two columns; one of the heads is upside down, while the other is tilted to one side. It is accepted by scientists that they were placed that way deliberately. Another is the teardrop design column which believed is the teardrop design in memory of the slaves who died while building the cistern.

The Hagia Sophia, former church then mosque, now museum.

Later on, we went to Hagia Sophia Museum which is next to the Basilica Cistern. Hagia Sophia is known as Aya Sofya in Greek, built during Emperor Theodosius time but then it was burnt down. Emperor Justinian later ordered to build a new basilica and it had become the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years before it turned to the principal mosque of Istanbul when Mehmet the conqueror converted it into a mosque in 1453.

The interior.

The decoration of the ceiling.

Mimbar(Mimber).

A mimbar in a mosque corresponds the function to the pulpit in a church. this is a line example of Ottoman period marble working craftsmanship. 16th Century.

Mosaic of Mary with Christ the child (mid), Emperor John Comnenus II (left) and Empress Eirene (right).

These mosaics are beautiful. Remember to look up or you might miss some of the mosaics. The mosaics were plastered over because the conqueror deemed them inappropriate for a mosque but which were restored later.

Dont forget to look around also when you are in the main hall as you will find four large medallions written in Arabic representing the names of Allah, Mohammed, caliphs Ali and Abu Bakar.

View of Blue Mosque(Sultan Ahmet Camii) from Hagia Sophia.

Hagia Sophia is real huge. We spent couple of hours just looking at its great architectures. We had lunch at a very nice restaurant situated at Hippodrome (Sultan Ahmet square). Staff was funny and food was good.

We then walked towards the main entrance of the Blue Mosque or also known as the Sultan Ahmet Camii. The Blue Mosque faces the Hagia Sophia. Two excellent buildings within sight.

Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque).

The Blue Mosque is an active and historical mosque in Istanbul. It is one of the two mosques that has six minarets (beautiful in its proportions) and has become one of the greatest landmarks of Istanbul with its traditional Islamic architecture. Shoes must be taken off to visit the mosque and a proper attire is a must. However, if your clothes are deemed improper, you will be given a cloth to cover yourself, so no worries.

The courtyard.

The dome.

The wide view of the mosque.

Blue mosque is incredibly impressive.

Look what we had done in this whole day. Three major tourist destinations, we were real exhausted. Yet when we reached home, Necla`s mother invited me to stroll along the Sea of Marmara (right two blocks in front of the apartment) before dinner.

Necla, Sevda and mother.

Piraf, fasulye pilaki, bread and berries.

Dinner was cooked before we go out. We had Turkish pilafs and fasulye pilaki (bean cooked with garlic, tomato paste and olive oil).

World Tour : Prologue

Sultanahmet Camii (Blue Mosque), Istanbul, Turkey. (May 2007)

A month after my graduation, i pursued what i was not expected to pursue. A job at a civil and construction company (or something) after getting a master degree from one of the top and prestigious universities in Japan, a steady income and life, in my head, that was what supposed to be eventually laid out in a golden platter for me.

From Di Wang`s observation deck, Shenzhen, China. (July 2007)

Fast rewind, approximately fourteen months ago, i had ticked off my plan to further my research from that list i made in university. So neither did i start working. Of course i did know what life meant and what i wanted in it. I was instead on a new list to fulfill - travel around the world.

Lourve Museum, Paris, France. (August 2007)

And i know this sounds like a lot of chicken soup but life indeed has a big big room for urges, for itches that have to be scratched, for joy and yes for mistakes along the way. "Do whatever now; go wherever now" was the hottest quote in my head. Windows of opportunity dont open that often. Once you had started working, you would never have the chance to explore a country leisurely. Or even if you had money at that time, i bet you would not have time or mood to travel, leaving your works behind.

Florence, Italy. (September 2007)

Thus, without having anything engaged, i decided to jet off on my own to far far away... Turkey, Vietnam, Cambodia, Macao, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Europe (Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Vatican City, Germany, Spain), UK, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia, from May 2007 till March 2008.

Floating Market, Bangkok, Thailand. (October 2007)

Travelling alone is a loser? Shut up. To be mean, i would reply "Do you have money to travel?". Well, being able to study and as a foreign student in Japan, i was able to meet a number of friends from all over the world besides some of my closed internet buddies. Basically, i was going to meet them in their countries and stayed with their families then they showed me around.

Hundred Islands, Alaminos City, The Philippines. (November 2007)

Of course, sometimes i had no choice but travelled all on my lonesome when i proceeded to the other cities or countries from my friends` places. Nonetheless, i met a bundle of nice backpackers while staying at those hostels. Networking is expanding, as usual.

Skydiving, Taupo, New Zealand. (December 2007)

Although i am still a fresh degree holder now, competing with those young fresh graduate, i have faith that i will beat them easily in both physically and mentally. I have the experiences others dont have. Moreover, i speak five languages (Cantonese, English, Japanese, Malaysian, Mandarin), could easily get a job in Singapore (Yo, i am currently hunting job there).

Sydney`s skyline with the Opera House, Australia. (January 2008)

Lately i have been travelling to Singapore for interviews. Sorry for not being able to update more often. Well, anyway since i am done with the graduation trip and Japan tour guide part, will seriously start posting my World Tour travelogues now onwards. Wish they would not be stale to you guys. Stay connected.

Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia. (February 2008)

Those travelogues would definitely be one of my precious mementoes to read through when i get old and hopefully also be able to give you a clear picture before you head off to any place i had been.

Saysong River, Vang Vieng, Laos. (March 2008)

FuFu Tour Guide
Hiroshima + Osaka, 25 March 2007

On the 6th of August 1945, the nuclear weapon Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima directly killing an estimated 80,000 people. By the end of the year, injury and radiation brought total casualties up to 140,000. Ten of thousands of the city`s buildings were completely destroyed, nonetheless, the Atomic Bomb Dome was the closest structure to withstand the explosion.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly known as Atomic Bomb Dome.

The building has been preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing, and now serves as the reminder of nuclear devastation and as a symbol of hope for world peace and elimination of all nuclear weapons. It is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

Atomic Bomb Dome, March 2007.

It started raining when we reached the Atomic Bomb Dome in the morning. But since we were there, i brought them to the museum that describes Hiroshima before and after the bombings.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

The Peace Memorial Museum exhibits also present the facts of the atomic bombing, with the aim of contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons throughout the world, to achieve the world peace. The museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of that event. It is one of the most popular of Hiroshima's destinations for school field trips from all over Japan and for people internationally too.

Picture of Hiroshima City flattened after the explosion

A section that focusing on the destruction caused by the after shocks of the blast.

War is the work of man.
Was is the destruction of human life.
War is death.
To remember the past is to commit oneself to the future.
To remember Hiroshima is to abhor nuclear war.
To remember Hiroshima is to commit oneself to peace.

By Pope John Paul Ⅱ

Damage by the radiation which goes into details about the health effects suffered by humans.

Hiroshima is known for okonomiyaki (お好み焼き), so i chose it as our lunch. Okonomiyaki is cooked on a hot-plate and usually right in front of the customer, with various ingredients. The layers are typically egg, cabbage, bean sprouts, sliced pork/bacon with optional items (mayonnaise, fried squid, octopus, cheese, mochi , kimuchi, etc.), and noodles (soba or udon) topped with another layer of egg and a generous dollop of okonomiyaki sauce.

Okonomiyaki, topped with fried squid.

The Torii of Itsukushima Shrine at low tide, October 2006.

This torii at the Itsukushima Shrine welcomes visitors to the island.

I wanted to show them another World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shrine with its famous structures torii gate that appears to be floating at high tide. Due to the bad weather, i decided to go back Osaka earlier and had dinner with my Kyoto`s host mother.

My Kyoto`s host mother said my sister is Bijin, bet you think so as well.

My mum, Kyoto`s host mum, and god mum.

We had a great time although i need to be the interpreter from Japanese to Cantonese & Hokkien and vice versa. Four of them flew back to Malaysia on the following day. It was real a blast for me. I was dead exhausted showing them around Kansai area (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe) and Hiroshima right three days after coming back from the United States, but i felt so happy as they are all my first guest.

My host mother is 78 years old, she is older than my granny.

Wish i had done my job and they had fun during their 6days5nights trip. So below are those highlights of the trip throughout the imperial capital Kyoto, ancient city Nara, metropolitan Osaka, vibrant city Kobe and atomic bombed city Hiroshima.

My baby, say you love me
Stay with me, stay with me
一人にさせない

(*) X 2

English Translation

You tell lies with a straight face
Laughing in a sick way
You tried your best to avoid tiring things

Feeling blue over asking so much
Everyone is seeking for peace
You are struggling for more, though you have had enough
Now you are just chasing after the shadow of love

My boring daily life has suddenly begun to shine
Since the day you appeared
Now i can think that i`m all right even when i`m lonely or in pain
I’m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love

Through sick times and healthy times,
On stormy days and sunny days, let`s walk together

I`m gonna tell you the truth
I chose a secret painful path
And you came to support me
You are the only one i can call a friend

Fake displays of strength and being greedy have become meaningless
Since the day you loved me
Even when i`m free and have inner strength, it is pointless if i`m alone
I`m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love

Oh Just a little more
Dont you give up
Oh i will never abandon you

If this cruel reality tries to tear us apart
It will just bring us closer than ever
Somehow i have a feeling that we will be able to do our best
I`m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love

My ordinary life has suddenly begun to shine
Since the day you stole my heart
I thought i could deal with loneliness and pain
I`m just a prisoner of love
Just a prisoner of love

Stay with me, stay with me
My baby, say you love me
Stay with me, stay with me
Dont leave me alone
