FuFu World Tour

Ozlem.

Turkiye 7th -22nd May 2007
Denizli, Izmir and Antalya - Part Five

After having a fun time in Pamukkale, i met up Ozlem, one of Necla`s best friends. Ozlem, a smart and charming girl was working at HSBC under her university internship programme. We walked to a recreational park near Pamukkale University. It was a great time even we just sitting at the park chatting. Our topics consisted of politic, economy, social, education and so on. FuFu travel is not only sightseeing, relaxing, city exploring, food or culture but communicate and mix up with the local as well as experience the real local life also.

Ozlem invited us to have dinner at her house. I was famished after talking and also lack of lunch. When we arrived Ozlem`s house, i was ready to attack the table. But her parents kept asking me questions. You know how it is when you are so hungry and you need to answer the questions and then after you eat a bit, you feel full? Anyway i still managed to eat most of the food i liked. Yogurt is always my favourite. Pickled cherry with syrup was way too good! Yummy!

The next day, Necla and i went to Izmir by Pamukkale express bus. We then went to the popular archaeological site lies three kilometres south of the Selcuk district of Izmir. Ephesus was an Ionian city in ancient Anatolia. The ruin of Ephesus are favourite international and local tourist attractions. If you typed Ephesus in Google, you will get sites which all starts off with `Ephesus, the best preserved classical city on the Mediterranean`.

The Harbour Street.

Even Lonely Planet starts off with the same line. But it is true. It is an awesome sight to see all the preserved buildings of Roman times now in the 21st century. It was a hot, hot day. First view of the city were the remains of the Harbour Street, a marble paved road which was the most celebrated street at that time. I bet it was a grand sight during its heyday with shops, baths and streetlights along its sides and water and sewerage channels beneath.

The marble paved road.

One of the most photographed buildings in Ephesus and i am sure many of you may have seen it before either in pictures, magazines etc is the Library of Celsus. It was built by Gaius Julius Aquila to commemorate his father, Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, the proconsul of the Province of Asia during 2C AD. Celsus is buried inside the library.

The Celcius Library

The Gate of Augustus.

The Temple of Hadrian.

The Temple of Hadrian was built in Corinthian style and later, renovated and was dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian. There are beautiful friezes with scenes depicting the foundation of the city and a statue of Medusa.

Close up.

Hercules Gate.

This gate is easily recognized by the two carvings of Hercules which depict him wearing a lion's skin. Constructed in 4th century AD, it was made narrow to prevent wheel vehicles from entering the city.

The site is large, in fact, Ephesus contains the largest collection of Roman ruins East of the Mediterranean. Only an estimated fifteen percent has been excavated. The ruins that are visible give some idea of the city`s original splendour, and the names associated with the ruins are evocative of its former life. The Roman theater dominates the view down Harbour Street which leads to the long silted-up harbour. It is still used for performances nowadays amidst protests. It was orginally a Hellenistic period building which was later restored by the Romans. It can seat up to twenty five thousand people.

The Roman Theater at Ephesus.

The Odeon.

This Odeon was built in the 2nd century AD and is one of the last few buildings you will pass as you head back. Looks like a mini version of the Roman theater, it was used for theatrical performances as well as a Senate House.

The souvenir shop in front of the exit.

We missed the performance telling the story of Ephesus during Roman Empire period. Luckily, i still managed to take pictures with some of the performers. They were very friendly. After that we moved back to the city, Izmir - the third most populous city of Turkey and the country`s largest port after Istanbul.

Izmir`s famous clock tower.

One of the more pronounced elements of Izmir harbour is the Clock Tower,a beautiful marble tower that rests in the middle of the Konak pier standing 25 meters in height. The tower features four fountains which are placed around the base in a circular pattern, and the columns are inspired by North African themes.

Izmir Port, seen from Konak Pier.

Konak Pier.

Cafes along the historic Pasaport Quay.

We sat down.

Then we had a cup of cay each and enjoyed the view of Izmir port.

Broadwalk at the pier.

Heart of the city.

I saw a special sandwiches with green chilli, tomatoes and cheese sold everywhere and curiously i bought one. Well, it was a strange combination but not bad afterall. I guess it must be Izmir specialty.

Turkish authentic style of breads.

I bought this, tasted not bad.

Now, Izmir is the official candidate to host the Universal Expo 2015 under the theme, New Routes to a Better World/Health for All.

Historic street at Alsancak neighbourhood.

Streets of the historic Alsancak neighbourhood must not be missed. Here you can enjoy the various works of architecture thought to had been built in the city during the Ottoman period. The streets were completely paved with stones, and paved streets became preponderant in the city.

The Bazaar.

So the next day, we were heading down Antalya, to one of Necla friend`s hometown, Kalkan and stay at her house.

fufu travel 65
Breakfast at the bus station.

Although it was a seven-hour-journey to Kalkan, the scenery along the way to Antalya was simply amazing. It was too perfect for a breathtaking bus journey with a good bus service.

We changed bus to Kalkan in Fethiye.

We arrived Kalkan at 8pm. Dinner was served on the table when we were brought to M`s house by her father. Whoa, fries was prepared as M`s mother afraid i might not get used to Turkish food. What a thoughtful mother. And because i look skinny, piraf was specially added by the host mother. Later on, fruits and tea were served up too. We called it a night as soon as i finished taking shower.

Port of Kalkan.

What a splendid authentic home dinner.

Date with my blog-reader

Meeting online buddy or blog-reader is actually a very common dating nowadays. So before officially starting my new job, i managed to meet up one of my readers in Singapore. I have been meeting numerous of cyber friends, but this doesnt mean that i am a random playboy, i dont simply meet a stranger by the way. Take note, i do care of couples of elements and everything counts including the weather before i head out. Anyhow, here is the entry written by Rose, the person i had met couple of months ago.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i knew him through blog-hopping. and he is the last person that i expect to hang out with during my stay. seriously. why would he bother to meet up? we only knew each other for less than a week. he has his life too. anyway, cut the crap. we met up finally.
the first time i met him, i was 5-10 min late. sweaty, smelly, dragging my tired feet, smeared mascara or was it the black eye-bags. Anyway, i am pretty sure i left bad first impression.

based on his description in text, "i'm wearing green+black specs+exit 4+burger king"..i was chanting, okay, green shirt green green black specs, all the way up to the exit. i saw Burger King and there he was, squatting and reading newspaper.

i somehow knew right then he is nice. and no, fyi, i dont judge by the cover. most of my books had bad covers yet they provide the best read around :)

he called me "Roses" so that, i gotta set right. my name is Rose.
(yeah, that bud with red petals which u guys, love to give up to ur gals as an appreciation of love. need i say more, for crying out loud)

the life that he had been through sounds impossible to me before.
like how a young child would look up to elder sibling, i asked him thousand and one questions. traveling and back-packing etc
basically, there were alot of first time for me when i was w him.

i had my joss-sticks burnt, fortune/fate read, first ever mango desserts, and of course, first ever person that i knew through cyber that meet up. it was everything that i had.
he took everything seriously even blogging. he gives a damn about what his readers think of his entries. i think he might be the next KennySia
i enjoyed his companionship so much so that we met up again on the second day.

we separated when i got on the bus home to my aunt's.
he will be starting off with his official job next monday, tomorrow la duh~~
give him lotsa love, shower him with lucks. :)

i never wanted to see his back before leaving, i know i will cry if i had done so

I believe every journey ends off with something and embark with something new and better, always.

a friendship that perhaps might uphold itself few decades down the lane. it is usually too early to assume. in the above picture, i am trying to pout so that my face appears much smaller

I truly has faith that whatever history/background a person might had been through, it is to be proud of and well-respected. a man with history is a man well-molded.

everybody has their own story to tell. life is to be respected.
to live is to be a student forever.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Allow me to add some of the other shots we had taken. Undoubtedly, it was unaccustomed and uncomfortable for both of us at first but soon or later we slowly break the wall and after a while we seems like have known each other for ages though we were growing up from different places, education background, families, etc. But who really care these? As long as we are clicked, we dont need adequate constant conversation like what friends really require, what really matter is the bond that tie us together.

After a marathon talk, we decided to have a drink.

The next day, we had dessert at Bugis Street.

Before eating our desserts...

Oh, i swear i wont try ginger milk curd again.

She looks so cute.

It was my pleasure to have a chance to meet up you Rose. Wish our cyber-friendship could last forever. Also, i would like to meet up more of my readers as i believe it must be fun communicating with readers from all walks of life.

Smiles / 笑容

My ever first name card.

In physiology, a smile is a a facial expression formed by flexing those muscles most notably near both ends of the mouth. Among humans, it is customarily an expression denoting pleasure, happiness or amusement, and can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety. Besides that, i found another few more types of smile in my working atmosphere that containing different meanings.

A smile with expectation can always found from your superior or senior when they pass or ask you to handle a little tiny task. Once you have successfully done your jobs, a smile that showing a grateful expression can also be found from them. I think superiors wish their subordinates could help and lessen them the burden. A smile from your superior after a completed task could real push you forwards and achieve higher.

I bet no one like the smile that hidden a sword behind (literally translated from Chinese, 笑里藏刀). Mind you, dont be so naive until you thoroughly trust and appreciate what your co-worker have nicely done everything for you. He/she may have done so with another purposes. This is the biggest lesson i have ever learned so far. Also, apart of doing your own stuff correctly, you have to watch out and make sure you wont fall into the trap in front of you. Even a small mistake may simply spoil your name. Anyhow, even if you are in trouble, dont be panic-stricken but admit your mistake (even it is a trap) directly to your superior. You may get scolded but at least it is worth to see the picture clearly after that.

It is not easy to earn a smile that denoting respect from your workers. They would always have complaints towards their works. Unless you are a good leader having a good interpersonal skill, your workers will willingly follow your command and complete the work for you. The smile of respect can also be found around the eyes. Thus, eyes contact is also one very important element. It is nothing but motivation, no matter how tired i am, whenever i see them smile at me happily after a task has completed, it boosts me up just like the caffeine of cup of coffee. I appreciate their priceless smiles that real make my days.

To be frank, this is only my first month working in this company, in the construction field. I dont mind living up the 8am to 8pm lifestyle temporarily. I am still learning hard at the job site while attending the construction safety course at night. I give myself couples of months to get to know the job, see whether if i could get used to it. Meanwhile, i have to value the current working lifestyle despite the average high salary compared with others. All work and no play makes FuFu a dull boy, so i chase for a balance between my career and life. I miss the days i used to spend on blogging, sorry for not being able to write more often, pardon me for a while ok? I will make the right decision very soon. Just give let me consider every aspect thoroughly.

Wanna be a model? Well, i ashamedly guess that i am qualified or photogenic enough to be a model. Dont you think so? Anyway anyway, it is too late to be scouted out for a promising young star now. Wait, who knows just an opportunity might turn me into a top model overnight? A hidden tiger has long been waiting to SOAR out loud. Guess i need a chance to show off myself afterall. Hey come on my readers, take it easy, i am just joking here.

Well, i would like to give a big hug to Berry, June & boyfriend and Su Zhen each who had shown up and brought each other a sweet moment on the 11th and 13th of July, 2008. Ponder when could i have that much fun again after joining a Japanese multi-national construction company. Doubt i have time to enjoy the urban living. But dont worry, i will anyhow squeeze time for blogging like what i am doing now.

Penta Ocean

Well, today is 080808 but i am not going to talk about Beijing Olympics. I assume nearly all of my readers know we have two main oceans on this lovely planet, which is Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. So what the heck is Penta Ocean then? It isnt an ocean by the way, it is actually a construction company based in Hiroshima, Japan since hundred of years ago.

Penta Ocean Construction is a leading Japanese comprehensive construction company with offices and involvement in many very large scale civil and architectural projects worldwide. Penta Ocean is also well known for its technological development capabilities.

The company i am currently attached to.

The company`s civil engineering unit also constructs airports and container terminals as well as dams, bridges, and highways. Work by its architecture unit includes concert halls, aquariums, office towers, and condominiums. Its environmental technology division builds wind power stations and recycling facilities. The company also has research and development operations for all of its divisions not only in Japan also actively taken part by the staff overseas.

One of the concert halls in Explanade, Singapore.

I bet none of you understand what Penta Ocean actually is unless you were in construction or building line. Anyway, make it easier for you to roughly know my company, for instance, Penta Ocean was the major contractor for the Changi Airport reclamation projects, the Esplanade of Singapore, Marina Bay, Jurong Island, etc and now having few major projects with the authorities in Singapore.

Top view of the Esplanade, Singapore.

I have started working since this month. Because i am still a fresh graduate, tonnes of stuff waiting me to pick them up. I am now designated in a Geo-Bund team, working with members originated from China, India, Taiwan and of course Japanese as well. I for the time being, need to go go to the work site everyday, learn and see how the work flow, how my senior supervise the workers and make sure the job is safely carried out and done nicely.

Esplanade in the evening.

Generally, i work from 8am till 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Despite the tight schedule, i have two days off this week as tomorrow will be the National Day of Singapore. I gonna put this weekend off to a good use. I may only be able to update once a week which is Sunday. Thus, if you real wanna sit on my sofa, gotta stay tuned ya.
